Journal #5

I believe that the three most important concepts we have covered in class so far are the writing affect, situation, and medium.  I believe that writing affect is the most important because it is the reaction that the piece of writing elicits.  It is almost the purpose of the message.  Like talked about in our previous reading, the writing affect is more than just the words that make up the piece, it’s the involuntary reaction we have to all art and literature before we even begin to understand what the actual meaning is.  Situation is important because it encompasses place and time.  Without the correct place and time or situation, it is easy to misconstrue a works message entirely.  Medium is also very important when it comes to spreading a message.  For example one would not try to pass a bill in government by writing it on a wall.  The medium with one wishes to convey their message also determines if the writing is in fact a piece of everyday writing.

Tattoos, I believe are a piece of everyday writing because each tattoo is unique to each individual and holds a different meaning to all of them.  The medium with which the tattoo is put there may be a commercialized business but I believe that because each tattoo is handmade and specific to each person it qualifies as everyday writing.  I also believe that the situation when one gets a tattoo is very important to the meaning behind it.  The writing affect comes into play here because before people even realize the meaning behind a tattoo they begin to draw up their own ideas and they begin to judge the tattoo and the person inadvertently.
