Journal #5 Tattoos

The three most important concepts of the course so far would be place, purpose and medium. I say place is one of the three most important concepts we have studied because place can have a huge impact on meaning and the message you are trying to convey to the readers. For example, place was discussed in relation to graffiti and how placement of the graffiti is vital to the spread of its message.  Purpose is very important as well because Purpose is a part of every piece of writing ever written.  When something is written there is always a purpose to it, even if the author does not realize what that purpose is in the beginning.  I also included Medium as one of the important topics because everyday writing does not just have to occur on paper and written in pen.  Graffiti, scrapbooks, and Zines are all good examples of non-traditional forms of writing. That is they are not just words on paper. They all manage to convey messages to an audience but in different ways.

I firmly believe that tattoos do align themselves with these concepts.  Placement of a tattoo for example, is very important because where you put the tattoo determines who sees it and whom the message behind it is conveyed to.  Purpose is also very important in relation to tattoos because tattoos, like the HIV tattoos in the reading, have a purpose. The people who were HIV positive, for example, got the tattoos to tell others of their condition. Tattoos can have less somber meanings and can also reflect something that you love.  Medium is relevant because tattoos are yet another form of writing. I believe tattoos are everyday writing because they can convey a message to an audience and are not formal pieces of writing in the sense that anyone can get one and everyone has access to this form of writing.
