Journal 4

I believe that place and scene has a huge impact on everyday writing because it has a dramatic effect on the context of any form of writing. Like Joey said, you'll get a significantly different reaction from someone if they were to encounter a piece of graffiti in a book, or a magazine, or any type of printed text, than you would if someone were to encounter a piece of graffiti on a wall out in public. The place and scene also have a huge effect on what is considered to be appropriate or not appropriate for a particular location, in order to evoke a particular response from the audience. Like the example from the reading, the ZEPPELIN ROCKS graffiti on the 911 venting wall, was probably placed there either for the purpose of getting the audience to react to it with even more anger and frustration, or in order to provide a bit of comic relief to what is otherwise a very serious and tragic situation.

Additionally, the scene and place of a piece of everyday writing plays a major roll in the circulation of ideas. The scene and place will have a substantial impact on the type of information circulating in a particular area, in order to appeal to the particular audience in that location. Like Emily said, the information and thoughts circulating at a formal dinner party for world-renowned scientists and philosophers would be completely different that the information and thoughts circulating that were generated from a piece of graffiti on the side of a highway.
