Journal 9

While the definition of what a writer is may not have changed since the start of the 21st century, the ways that people go about writing in the 21st century certainly have. I still believe that a writer is anybody who composes a piece of writing with a specific purpose in mind, and that is true today, just as it was prior to the start of the century. Twenty years ago, it was just as easy for somebody to compose a letter or a note, as it is for somebody to send a email or compose a Facebook post today, and while in terms of everyday writing, theres a difference in why someone would chose to write a letter instead of an email, or vice versa, it doesn't make either of those mediums less of a form of writing. It has not become any easier to be considered a writer, the mediums of writing that most people use in the 21st century have just changed.

I agree with the statement Claire made, disagreeing with the article's claim that the internet (and really any form of digital technology) was not a driving force for new kinds of writing. The internet has allowed for new forms of composition to emerge; ones that made it possible for anybody to share information and media with more people, much more rapidly than any other medium of writing. I still maintain that it has not changed changed what it means to be a writer, but the internet has completely changed what are considered the "normal" mediums of writing.
