I personally believe that the people of Shenandoah National
Park are considered to be writers. The letters written to park
officials by residents were for the need to clarify rules that seemed confusing, concerns over problems with their neighbors, or simply to defend their
honor. The residents of Shenandoah National Park were able to use letters as a
form of communication with park officials in order to express their emotions
and their thoughts, which is why I consider them to be writers. Although many
letters contained poor grammar and spelling, it does not rule out the residents
from being considered writers. Many well-known writers such as Ernest Hemingway
and F. Scott Fitzgerald were not the greatest spellers of their time, but are
noted as some of the greatest writers in history. We must remember that these letters
were written during the earlier half of the 20th century, when people
were not nearly as educated as they are today.
As Andrew mentioned, being a writer does not mean that you
have to get published for your work or make money off of your work, you just
need the ability and a reason to write. Some writers purposefully write with
incorrect grammar and spelling, so I think that you do not need to have the
greatest spelling or grammar in order to be considered a writer either. As long
as someone has a purpose for writing and can effectively communicate their
thoughts and ideas in some type of way, then I consider them to be a writer. The residents of
Shenandoah National Park may not be the best writers, but nonetheless they are
writers.
