Journal #1

Genre was defined as being a category of similar works connected by repetition. “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer can shed light on the makings of a genre and how it is instinctive to do it. Bitzer talks about how situations call for reactions and of how they can be appropriate or inappropriate. This can be seen in “Navigating Genre” as whether a situation fits into one genre or another, and how, based on the qualities of that specific genre, one response may be more or less appropriate than another. As Emily pointed out, “genre is more than just defining types, but having the knowledge to master and use these types in certain circumstances.”

Determining what is classified in any given genre can be helpful by letting a rhetor understand more clearly what methods they should use to convey their message. Personally, I believe these concepts will improve the style and quality of my own writing in the future: that writings will be more appropriately delivered, and that works will be more thoroughly understood for their intent to the audience.
