Journal #2: What Does it Mean to be a Writer?

I believe it is a fair statement to call the people of Shenandoah National Park writers. Most of them may not have received a formal education in grammar or spelling but they all are writing with a purpose and to me this is what qualifies it as writing.  Andrew mentioned that they were transferring their thoughts and opinions through written language. I agree with this because they are conveying to the government their feelings and opinions as to why they should not be moved out of their homes.  Despite their broken skills in grammar and spelling they are able to convey their message to their intended audience, the government.

A writer is someone who writes for a purpose and I believe that the people of Shenandoah National Park are doing just that.  If writers are people who write for a purpose I think it can be argued that everyone who writes is a writer because I believe that there always has to be some kind of underlying purpose behind writing. To be a writer means that you are transferring feelings, opinions, or ideas into written words for an audience. “Written” can mean either in the form of handwriting or digital typing.  For example a novelist writes to entertain their readers and a teenage girl writes in her diary to clear her own head, making her both the writer and the audience.
